Pearl Sizing

When you purchase pearls online, the process can be easy if you know the size of the pearls you are getting.  To familiarize you with the sizing of pearls and the diameters shown in our descriptions we providing these size charts. The pearls are relative to the size of the dime.

 

 

AKOYA PEARLS

Japanese Akoya Pearls start at 5.5mm in size and go up to 10mm.  Once you get in to the larger sizes such as 7.5mm and up, the pearls are considered to be larger, more rare and more expensive.

TAHITIAN PEARLS

Although Tahitian Pearls come in sizes that are smaller than 8mm, this is the smallest size that is easily available in the market.  The average sizes of Tahitian Pearls are 8mm to 9mm with anything larger considered to be rare.

WHITE AND GOLDEN SOUTH SEA PEARLS

Similar to Tahitian Pearls, South Sea pearls come in sizes smaller than 8mm, but this is the smallest size that is readily available in the market.  The average sizes of South Sea pearls are from 9mm to 10mm with anything larger considered to be rare.

FRESHWATER PEARLS

Freshwater Pearls are readily available in sizes starting at 5.5mm and go up to 10mm. Larger sizes are available but they are considered to be rare.
